On this page we present an abstract of our recently updated, independent ETL & Data Integration research on the software vendor Microsoft and its product portfolio (such as Azure Data Factory, Sql Server Integration Services and Microsoft Azure). Microsoft ETL & Data Integration scores better in our survey than SAP but slightly worse than SAS. Of all the main criteria in our research, Microsoft scored the highest on data replication and has a poor performance in master data management. Within the context of ETL & Data Integration, we have researched the pros and cons of Microsoft Products, and arranged them by topic (DI, extract transform load, data replication and data quality). We also display the key functionalities of the software products like Azure Data Factory, Sql Server Integration Services and Microsoft Azure et cetera.

How does Microsoft ETL & Data Integration perform on certain components?

In our study we looked in detail at the different products of Microsoft ETL & Data Integration software. More than 290 criteria were used in the process. The bar graph below shows the scores (on a scale of 1-5) of Microsoft Products, compared to other [survey name] tools. Please note that Passionned Group is 100% independent of the software vendors in the study. We are not a reseller, we do not make deals or have any legal ties to the vendor. Among other things, we help and advise organizations in selecting the right ETL & Data Integration platform.

Three recent innovations of Microsoft Products-tools and the version history

Lately, we see a negative development in terms of ETL & Data Integration functionality and support for operating systems, cloud platforms and connectivity. The latest innovations are in the areas of data quality management > reverse geocoding, data replication > data synchronization > master data synchronization and data management > big data management > big data preparation.

We investigated Microsoft’s current releases of its complete ETL & Data Integration proposition. Below we give an overview of the various releases of all available ETL & Data Integration products of Microsoft:

  • Azure Data Explorer: 101
  • Azure Data Factory: October 2022 June 2022 1
  • Azure Data Studio: 1.46.1 1.41.2 1.41
  • Azure Databricks: 30
  • Azure Synapse Analytics: April 2023 March 2022 January 2022 November 2021
  • Data Factory: February 2023 June 2022
  • Microsoft Dataverse: 2022 2021
  • Microsoft Fabric: December 2023 October 2023
  • Microsoft Power Platform: 2023 2022 36
  • Microsoft Products: 365
  • Sql Data Sync: 2.0
  • Sql Server Integration Services: 13.0

Behind each product we show the version numbers, the most recent versions are mentioned first.

Can you easily determine the licensing costs of Azure Data Factory, Sql Server Integration Services and Microsoft Azure?

It is difficult to determine exactly how much a license of Azure Data Factory, Sql Server Integration Services and Microsoft Azure costs because it depends on the country, the number of users, the connectors to data sources, and at what point in the year you request a quote. If you do this a few weeks before the end of Microsoft’s fiscal quarter, you may be in for a decent discount. As part of a cloud-first strategy, it makes sense running the software in the cloud. Often you only pay for what you consume in resources. The purchase cost of Azure Data Factory, Sql Server Integration Services and Microsoft Azure may not be the most important costs, but maintenance and support do show up in your budget every year.

What makes Microsoft ETL & Data Integration distinctive

In our study, we see that Microsoft in the field of ETL & Data Integration software has several specific features and thus differentiates itself from the competition. This makes Microsoft Products more or less unique: automated data synchronization, serverless data integration service, generating test data, bulk inserts and file replication.

The advantages and disadvantages of Microsoft Products

Get to know the key features of Microsoft ETL & Data Integration in the following topic paragraphs. There we describe all the pros and cons of Microsoft ETL & Data Integration, Azure Data Factory, Sql Server Integration Services and Microsoft Azure, et cetera. This overview and scores are not rigid: Microsoft can currently work on creating new capabilities (such as support for quickbooks, database replication, SOQL and EAI). Or a certain feature is not (yet) (well) documented.
